PERSPECTIVE ON THE CALIFORNIA BAR EXAM
As Black’s Law Dictionary states, the California Bar Exam is something you “must pass” if you want to practice law here in California. Just as simple and just as hard as that. To distill down the essence of the requirements for admission as described by the State Bar of California, you must show the Committee of Bar Examiners that you will be a competent attorney. Not the best attorney. Not the best criminal defense attorney. Not the best Constitutional Law scholar. And definitely not a master of the Rule Against Perpetuities. Mere competence is our goal and I will work with you to give you the confidence you need to show the Committee you’re competent.
SUPPLEMENTAL SUPPORT, GUIDANCE AND FEEDBACK
As someone who used to work for the biggest bar review course around, I understand the value of the large traditional bar review course. Those review courses are able to produce, publish and distribute substantive law review lectures by nationally renowned professors along with accompanying outlines and large volumes of practice materials such as essays, performance tests and MBE questions. I cannot replace the academic firepower of the professors offered by those companies (ie BARBRI, Themis, etc.), but I can help you organize, memorize and practice the material reviewed by those professors. In that way, a California Bar Coach tutoring package is meant to supplement a traditional bar review course either taken previously or concurrently.
(Please note, in order to help you select the best traditional course and get the most for your money, I’d be happy to discuss with you some of the relative merits of each course along with some of the feedback I’ve gotten from students who used them. This advice is free and is open to anyone regardless of whether you end up using California Bar Coach.)
PERSONALIZED PROGRAM TO FIT YOUR SCHEDULE
While traditional bar review courses do some things very well, the same schedule and series of practice assignments will not work for everyone, especially repeat takers, applicants who must work or care for their families while studying, practicing attorneys who are moving to California from out of state, and those applicants who may not have developed the best study habits prior to and during law school. Your California Bar Coach will work with your work and family schedule to help develop a study plan that fits your life. The California Bar Coach will also be there to support you along the way and ensure that you are on track to be successful. It is a common misconception that you must do X number of questions each day or study over 12 hours every day for months to be successful on the exam. Certainly applicants have passed the bar exam using that approach, but I believe it is the quality of your practice and studying that makes the difference, not the quantity. As your California Bar Coach, I can help you use your review materials as effectively as possible.
